If I have the following line in my property file:

checkstyle.header.file =

Then my whole file is ignored. No message. It seems that the sun defaults are silently used.

Commenting out the line fixes the problem.

(BTW, I have only experienced this problem and tested the fix running under the maven plugin.)

I don't understand the last sentence - do you mean

    • in standalone mode everything works fine (that would be a
      Maven bug) or
    • you haven't tried checkstyle in standalone mode.

I have only used checkstyle from within maven. But given the
nature of the problem, it seemed to be unrelated to maven.
(The property file is simply passed into the checkstyle ant
    task.)

This is now fixed in CVS, specifying an empty string as the
header file will result in an Exception in the configuration
    phase.

The fix will be available in the next release, Checkstyle 3.0
