When the Gnome top panel is set to transparent in Ubuntu Karmic Koala, Checkgmail insists on using the system theme color, and will not respond to use of the Set Tray Background dialogue. This isn't a problem with Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (or previously). I wonder if this is an conflict with some setting in Compiz? Any ideas?

I've attached a screen shot.

Thanks garwol. I looked at that bug report, but I think that post is saying that the application needs to use TrayIcon instead of GTKStatusIcon. Anyway, it's not a user setting or choice. I searched Synaptic but didn't see anything that I could switch out. This is still unresolved as it is for Banshee users. It sounds like Gnome changed something and that checkgmail and banshee (among others) will have to make a code change in order to correct the icon problem.

I'm not a programmer, but I attempted to edit and replace the references to TrayIcon with GtkStatusIcon, but it didn't work. I'm sure this would be easily fixed by someone who knew what they were doing.

After googling around, turns out that this problem is not unique to Ubuntu but occurs all distros using Gnome 2.28.1. I've changed the description of this bug as well. To recap, if my top panel is set to transparent, checkgmail's icon stays the same color as the default system color instead of being transparent as well. This is affecting many different programs that use the notification area (Jungldisk, Banshee, QuodLibet among others). Dropbox works perfectly well.

Previously, we could use the eyedropper to color the checkgmail background, but this isn't working anymore either.
