MandrakeSoft filed for 'cessation de paiement' on the 13th, meaning that they declared that they can't pay their debt and ask for it to be put on hold while the company reorganises. Within two weeks the 'tribunal du commerce' will rule whether the company will get this protection (redressement judiciaire) or be liquidated (liquidation judiciaire). If the 'redressement' is accepted, Mandrake will be put on observation for a period of 4 to 20 months at the end of which it will either go back to business as usual or be liquidated. Of course at any time an acquisition is still possible (and likely I dare say, as it's been mentioned by Gaël Duval). It's a bit sad that Mandrake didn't manage to get contracts from the state like Suse did in Germany. There's huge market for Linux training and support there and that would have been a great move for both parties. Surely our government will realise that MS and Novell are not the only kids on the block in a couple of years, too late for Mandrake. In any case even if it is the end for MandrakeSoft I'm confident that Mandrake the distribution will survive. -- Christophe |
