I checked in the change that enables the MeshCenter field. Grant, if
you'd like to experiment with it, there's a new EXE here:
For Eros, I used MeshCenter [ 2 0 0 ] . . . this seemed at least
approximately correct, but I really need to create a tool to automate the
process of determining accurate mesh centers.
The other change I checked in this morning is an optimization for spheroid
planet rendering. You should see frame rate increases of up to 50% (and
possibly more) when the camera is near a planet. The optimization is a
result of my work on dynamically loading texture tiles from the hard
drive--much better culling of sphere patches was required before this had
a chance of working well. I'm proceeding with the rest of the code for
this project now . . . It will enable Celestia to use 32k or larger
textures even on systems without vast amounts of video RAM. These
dynamically paged textures don't need to have uniform resolution; regions
of particular interest can be mapped in much greater detail.
