In the configure script there should be an option to
enable profile building so that performance data can be
generated using GNU gprof. GCC supports this through
the use of the -pg flag in its compiler/linker command
The configure script should be changed to have a
--enable-profile option. If this option is enabled, the
script should check if we are using a gcc compiler and
if so, add in the -pg flag to the CXXFLAGS variable and
the LDFLAGS variable.
Issue: Do any other compilers support this flag?
