For what it's worth, my experiences:
Indeed, the SANE driver just works on USB. However, there is space in it
for inserting the parallel port code. I tried to implement it, but it
would not work on my 6800. Either my printer is broken or there are
differences in the protocol.

Have you looked in project's CVS archive?
There are bits and pieces of code there.
The trick is to get the device to talk. For USB you just=20
use one of the bulk endpoints, for parport see my code in CVS.
The protocol itself is pretty dumb, you basically
send short ESC-sequences and the device sends the=20
data back. It is partially documented here:
