I didn't realize from your first message that the problem was specific to objects with shaders! Does it crash with any shaders or just specific ones or specific objects? What does the shader line look like?
You can 'l object' (that's an "ell" not a one) to see what shader is applied, or run "mater object" to set/see the shader on a given object.
