    Hello,
I tried install lattest bristol-0.20.3 on my 64studio distro. And I get weird message during instalation after make command.
    Maybe some dependecy issue.

    Thanks for any help.

    Mira

This is the one of the very few dependencies that bristol has - it needs about five X11 include files for the GUI library, brighton. As far as I know these files have not changed much in ten years as X11 is quite stable, and sometimes I have considered distributing versions that can be found if you don't already have them installed. Perhaps I should try that.

I take it you did a './configure' in bristol-0.20.3? It should have reported that you need to install the libX11-devel package from your distribution, it should install the header files I need to operate with X11.

Can you find this package and try './configure && make install' again?

Other dependencies are on the ALSA libraries, Jack libraries or OSS headers: at least one of them needs to be installed too.

      Regards,

      Nick.

      Hello Nick,
      So quick answer....Ops
      I found some HOW-TO on 64studio forum and I installed these packages:xorg-dev, libasound2-dev, libjack-dev.
http://www.64studio.com/howto_bristol ... maybe you are also contributed to this thread, aren't you?
After this I tried install Bristol again and everything went well.
      Now I have a other problem ...
I run bristol from bristol file in /bin folder but it run just like directly connected to sound card... not possible connect via Jack.
In the forum mentioned above is advice to change build file "6.6 Within the editor, change line 11 from JACKPKG=no to JACKPGK=yes, save the changes, exit the editor"
But didn't find this file in bristol install directory.

Now don't know where can be a problem.

Sorry for my english and terminology... I am a bit new in Linux.

      Regards

      Mira

The 'build' script was from the 0.9 stream, it has been dropped now in preference of the GNU autotools (./configure && make install and all that). The reason bristol does not compile the jack drivers is probably because it cannot find the jack.pc file. These are usually in /usr/lib/pkgconfig however sometimes the jack install process does not include them or perhaps even the distribution does not include them.

Try something like 'find /usr -name jack.pc' and then configure PKG_CONFIG_PATH to include this directory.

I have at times put comments on the 64Studio howto page and will update it presently.

      Regards, nick

      Hello,

I checked where is jack.pc installed and it is in default dir /usr/lib/pkgconfig.
So it is probably well installed, coz I tried command "startBristol -jack -obxa -gain 4 -pixmap",
and it works well with Jack.
I can run Bristol from command line and change name of instruments I would like to use???
Option -pixmap is only for 64bit systems??

      Thanks for help

      Hello,

One other question ... Exist complete list of options for startBristol command?
I tried startBristol --help and got this:

      startBristol [-explorer|-mini|-memory|-hammond|-b3|-dx|-axxe|-odyssey|-2600|-mono|-poly |-juno|-prophet|-pro10|-pro52|-mixer|-vox|-rhodes|-rhodesbass|-obx|-obxa|-aks|<others>]  [-oss|-alsa|-jack] [[-help|-h] [-verbose|-v]]

I think it is not complete list.

      Regards

      Mira

PS:Forgot to say... Bristol is pretty nice instrument..:-)

      Hello Mira,

Pleased things work now. So, bristol will always default to the ALSA interface. It will only use Jack or OSS if you request it with those options. It could be argued that more sensible would be to use a specific interface if the option is given and exit if it doesn't work, and if no option is given to try Jack, then ALSA, then OSS with my favorite defaults. There were some negative comments on the net regarding this approach however I quite like it and may implement later on in the 0.20 stream as a maintenance release. If you want it sooner open a bug on this site.

The -pixmap is always an option. Well, almost: the early releases only had a pixmap interface to X11 but I knew it was a bit slow. Anyway, it worked. Later on I did a lot of optimisation of the GUI including a color cache, search algorithm and added the XImage interface that is more efficient for drawing things. The results on my machine were anywhere from 10 to 20 times faster with these changes. I kept the pixmap code for no real reason other than that it was there, and kept it as a run time rather than compile time option.
So, to make a long story boring, there was a problem with creating XImages with 64 bit systems and naturally that problem only occurs if you use XImages, hence if you use the -pixmap option that I left in the code for no real reason will work around an issue with data sizing 32vs64 bit. It is also not really slower since the pixmap still uses the color cache and the 64 bit systems are probably a bit faster too. Nice result, -pixmap was a solution to a problem that had not occured at the time.

You can get a full list of options to bristol if you type "startBristol -v -h". It runs to  several pages covering the emulations, GUI, audio and synth options.

Bristol is not interactive, or at least not the GUI. What that means is there is no way to start more emulations from the GUI - try to right click your mouse, you will see an empty menu pop up that will eventually give access to start other GUI, but the brighton menu interface is, er, not quite finished as you can see.

You can however do the following:

startBristol -gain 4 -pixmap -obxa -jack &
startBristol -gain 4 -pixmap -b3 -engine -channel 3

The first one will start an Oberheim OBX-a emulator with the pixmap GUI interface - it will start then the engine with the Jack audio interface. The second line will start another GUI but no engine, it will connect to the existing one, request the same engine start a Hammond B3 emulation and start it on MIDI channel #3. The OBX-a will use channels 1 and 2 (it is a layered synth but that may change presently) and the Hammond will use 3 and 4 for its two manuals.

The same engine will do both synths at the same time multitimbrally, admittedly at the moment to a single stereo output, that may change in the future as well such that each emulation appears to Jack as a different set of outputs with some default connections to start with. If you give synth the same MIDI channel then the engine will layer the two synths on top of each other and you can change the MIDI channel from the GUI to try that.

If you kill any of the two GUI above then you should see some diagnostics about 'removing one obxa', 'removing one hammondB3', etc. The reaping of emulations (starting them stopping them several times) has not been widely tested due to the fact that there is no real interface for doing it. If you have problems just open up a bug here on SourceForge, I track them.

      Regards, Nick.

      Hello Nick,

Really full-range explanation... You are working on very nice project... a lot of sounds in one application.. all great synths in one pocket...

Thanks a lot for your help, I am pretty sure I will watch this project now and again.

      Best Regards

      Mira
