No

I hoped that signals fed into the inputs of the mini emulation would be controlled by the 'External' knob to be fed through the filter & VCA, but it doesn't seem to work in 0.60.1 (I haven't tried any older versions yet).

Should I expect this to work?

Colin.

    Hi Colin,

Man, I have been waiting for 6 years for somebody to actually report this. No, it is very unlikely to work. It did once upon a time but it was really shoehorned into the code and was eventually laid to rest. I am more than happy to rectify this but it never made it on to the shortlist because for the last few months there have been a lot of very interesting requests that people did seem to want and would use.

So, I recently added 4 input and output to the ARP 2600 but they are only for Jack. Out of interest, do you use mostly jack or alsa? The reason it kind of got left is that ALSA gives me 16 bit samples and jack gives me +/-1.0f floats. The conversions are not as trivial as they should be.

    Kind regards, nick

As a side note, you can feed the solina output to the mini input, admittedly it won't work but you can do it.

You could alternatively connect a B3 output to an ARP 2600 CV input signal, into the filter with cutoff from an LFO ramp wave which has been passed through S/H at a higher sampling rate than the LFO and have some Won't Get Fooled Again fun from The Who. I think it was called the 'heavily processed organ' sound. I haven't tried it but it is supposed to work. My tests for the ARP 2600 CV processing was to have the envelope from one ARP2600 drive the filter from another one (which lead to a great deal of confusion with regards to which 2600 I was looking at and lead to the changes for the other issue you raised today of Jack naming and window title bar text.

That should work, the ARP IO buffers are handled separately from it's audio input that is also broken.

Will work on a fix that might be Jack only, not ALSA, that is easier to deal with and I think makes more sense than ALSA in the context of processing signals. Any advice or recommendations?

    Kind regards, nick.

    Hello Nick,

I was indeed trying to feed the solina through the mini, and I was disappointed when it didn't work. Really, no-one else has reported this? I have to say that on the rare occasions I've got my hands on a real Moog, the most fun I had was plugging other stuff into it. I'd love it if this was possible with Bristol.

Anyway, to answer your first question: I'm using jack for all my audio (except for watching YouTube, and I can probably cope without being able to filter video soundtracks through Bristol). I think you're right, that the inputs only really make sense for jack.

Meanwhile, I'll have a play with the ARP 2600: it sounds like there are some fun possibilities for sonic mayhem there.

    Colin.

    Hey Colin,

I will admit I probably would've reported it, if I had tried it! I actually had no idea the moog could recieve and filter external sources!

    Andrew.

    Hi Guys,

I now have code that will take External input and process it. Tested with the Solina into the Mini filters. It was truly never reported as an issue, just one request about 5 years ago for the b3 into the ARP but I couldn't do it then for other reasons (limited Jack support).

Will also go and have a quick look at the ARP inputs as well to make sure that works too. The ARP CV should be ok, the ARP audio input is what I am interested in now but will test them both. There are quite a few file changes that were required to make this happen, the best I can do is give you a beta upload of 0.60.2.

I also review the ALSA code to make sure that it could inject the same signal levels into the engine but did not get to test this. For the other synths that have external intputs, they might have to be reviewed one by one - they all do different things with this buffer, some of which they shouldn't do. Anyway, the Mini now works and I think the 2600 will too before I release any code.

    Kind regards, nick

The mini and arp both now seem to work, the arp for its audio input and its CV inputs.

I can post some code on sourceforge, another 0.60.2 beta if you want some fixes in the short term. Also considering releasing the code this coming weekend, there are quite a lot of changes in there now.

    Regards, nick.

Hey, speedy work! Thank you! Looking forward to trying it out in 0.60.2.

    Cheers,
    Colin.
