Is there a more detailed description of the USB functions than what is provided in the NXC Programmer's Guide that, e.g., says what the various USB buffers are for and how to use them, and what the different USB states are and what they mean? If not, is there a sample program that demonstrates how to use the USB functions?

These functions are largely a mystery at present. The API functions to which you refer are simply an exposure of the IOMap read/write capability of the NXT firmware as it is exposed for the Comm module. Experimentation is your friend. If you look at how the Bluetooth read and write system functions work in the NXT firmware you may be able to figure out how to do similar things with these USB functions. I just haven't had the time to investigate exactly what you can or can't do with these functions.
