Unfortunately, it seems that the development team has other
things on their minds besides fixing bidwatcher for us in their spare
time. :-)

To help things along, I would like to offer a bounty of US$ 50 for
the resolution of this bug.

It has been suggested that eBay now requires the use of https for
bidding, and that it might make sense to replace the HTTP code in
bidwatcher with libcurl, which supports https.

I realize that this may be more than a quick hack, so in case $50
is not sufficient motivation, I'd like to encourage other users to
contribute to the bounty.

Sincerely,
Chris Ferebee

I'll tack on $10 to add SSL.

I just uploaded Patch 1084042 in the user submitted patch
section. It would be great if you could test it out before
I start cleaning it up, or making modifications to improve
the speed. You will need to have libcurl installed and
modify the makefile to link against libcurl.

By the way, I find jbidwatcher to be a nice program as well
if things break again and you really need to snipe an auction.

@sbond: Your patch seems to work for me. (woo-hoo!)

At least I was able to bid successfully. I will try sniping some auctions
    with it next.

The new code seems to be quite slow, as you mention, it took a LONG
time from launch until the first screen redraw, with about 30 expired
auctions in the list. I'm running bidwatcher on a 533 MHz Celeron with an
    out-of-date installation of Debian unstable.

jBidwatcher is nice, but my SO and I like to run bidwatcher on the Linux
box over VNC so we can shutdown/reboot/sleep our Macs without
worrying about missing an auction. jBidwatcher works fine on OS X, but I
haven't gotten it running on Linux.

I just put sdbond's patch into CVS this morning with some
small modifications. I am also seeing a lag on the startup
screen which I will try to look into. I also added
autoconf tests for libcurl so you shouldn't have to do any
    Makefile editing.

Kevin has officially blessed the patch, so I'm closing this bug.

sbond, please come forward to collect the bounty, Kevin says
you get credit. :-) I sent you email as well.
