How many people are still using Panther (OS X 10.3) regularly? Since we can no longer test/debug BibDesk on it, it's becoming harder to maintain "support" with any degree of certainty that it actually works. Dropping our notional support would allow us to remove some hacks (of varying degrees of nastiness), and probably make our primary platform (Tiger) more reliable. This only means that 10.3.9 users would be limited to using the last 10.3-compatible release, whatever that happens to be, but it would no longer be updated regularly. thanks, Adam |

Shall we vote? I am using OS 10.3.9 and like BibDesk a lot, although admittedly not the more advanced features... If I have a record in a weird format that doesn't fit the input fields, I write it up manually in a separate TeX-readable file. I only have a dozen of such cases in several hundreds of records, no big deal. So, I guess I'd learn to live with the last working 10.3.9-compatible release... I am on 10.3.9 and won't be able to upgrade until I get a new laptop---another year. OK, so a couple of people are still using 10.3.9 (understandable; it's a good OS), and the current release of BibDesk (which isn't that bad, either). Can one of you test save/save as functionality in the latest nightly build? Part of the issue here is that we have code paths that we can't test, because they're only executed on Panther...and less testing leads to less reliability (and more likelihood of data loss, frankly). Also, test the orphaned files feature, as our asynchronous Distributed Objects code was developed and tested only on Tiger. Hi and hello, Sorry for responding that late, I thought I'd stick to 1.2.6 on my 10.3.9 System as I am right now finishing a book - in this position it might not be the best idea to have everything spoilt: Never change a running system if you're in the end spurt ;) I did not have any apparent issues regarding save/save as with the 1.2.7 (vv418) build 20060818. Tests performed: - open a utf encoded .bib file (~140 entries) - add 1 publication, save. - delete 4 publications, save. - save as with a different filename in the same location. - take a quick look with diff: nothing in the bib files has changed apart from the added/deleted stuff. Files both look ok also with opening in 1.2.6. I am not using the AutoFile feature and thus do not have any orphaned files. When I tried it, BibDesk crashed with the following error: ################################## Date/Time: 2006-08-20 17:08:56 +0200 OS Version: 10.3.9 (Build 7W98) Report Version: 2 Command: BibDesk Path: /Volumes/BibDesk/BibDesk.app/Contents/MacOS/BibDesk Version: 1.2.7 (v418) PID: 3638 Thread: Unknown Link (dyld) error: dyld: /Volumes/BibDesk/BibDesk.app/Contents/MacOS/BibDesk Undefined symbols: /Volumes/BibDesk/BibDesk.app/Contents/MacOS/BibDesk undefined reference to _OSAtomicCompareAndSwap32Barrier expected to be defined in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib ################################# I tested it again after copying Bibdesk.app to my Desktop, getting the same error. One minor GUI error is an issue with the newly added scrollbar for horizontal scrolling in the errors/warning window (see attached screenshot). Other than that, the build does not seem to cause any problems for me and my .bib files. Cheers & keep up the good work, Stephan Adam R. There are probably some crashing issues to be aware of on 1.2.6, though (check the release notes). > I did not have any apparent issues regarding save/save as with the > 1.2.7 (vv418) build 20060818. > Tests performed: > - open a utf encoded .bib file (~140 entries) > - add 1 publication, save. > - delete 4 publications, save. > - save as with a different filename in the same location. > - take a quick look with diff: nothing in the bib files has changed > apart from the added/deleted stuff. I mainly wanted to make sure that it was actually saving, and that there wasn't an infinite loop (mixing 10.3 and 10.4 saving is tricky). > I am not using the AutoFile feature and thus do not have any > orphaned files. > When I tried it, BibDesk crashed with the following error: > [...] > dyld: /Volumes/BibDesk/BibDesk.app/Contents/MacOS/BibDesk Undefined > symbols: > /Volumes/BibDesk/BibDesk.app/Contents/MacOS/BibDesk undefined > reference to _OSAtomicCompareAndSwap32Barrier expected to be defined > in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib I was afraid of that, so thanks for confirming. We'll have to do a bunch of code revision or else make this 10.4-only (my vote is to limit to 10.4). > I tested it again after copying Bibdesk.app to my Desktop, getting > the same error. > > One minor GUI error is an issue with the newly added scrollbar for > horizontal scrolling in the errors/warning window (see attached > screenshot). Weird. Does it go away if you resize the window? I'm seeing similar scrollbar oddities with OmniWeb, so this might be a general Apple bug. Thanks for the testing and report! With that, I think we can keep 10.3.9 support a bit longer. regards, Adam |
