Basilisk II monitor problems

I am running Basilisk II on a HP/Compaq nx9020 notebook, 1.5G Celeron M processor, Windows XP Pro SP3.

It works fine for normal Mac emulation. At least I've had no real problems with the OS, which is System 7.5.5, but when I try to play a game (Wolfenstein 3D 1st Encounter, Warcraft II Demo, and any of the 3 Marathon games), I have monitor trouble.

Wolfenstein 3D - No color-capable monitors are attached to this system. (Splash screen appears before, and when I click this message appears. Clicking Quit terminates the program.)

Warcraft II Demo - The window appears blank, with the title screen appearing to the left of the window, and then the program hangs. Restart the OS to get out.

Marathon, M2 and M-Infinity - Sorry, Marathon requires a 13" monitor (640x480) or larger which can be set to at least 256 colors or grays. Clicking Quit terminates the program.

I have tried multiple settings in Basilisk. No matter what settings I try, the Monitors control panel says the monitor is a Multiple Scan Display, with one item in the selection box. That item is whatever the setting in Basilisk II is (640x480, or 800x600, or 1024x768, all at 75Hertz instead of the 60H it's set to in the B2 Prefs) and millions of colors (or grays). No matter what I try, I cannot get multiple screen sizes or different color mode settings. The ColorSync Profile System doesn't seem to matter. Every profile has the same result.

Can anyone offer any assistance? I know it has something to do with the way Basilisk is "seeing" the monitor, but I am clueless where hardware is concerned.

    Thanks in advance.

I just noticed that the revision numbers of the files indicate differences. The version I am running is 0.8.0.142. Is there a build of the executables for v8.1 (I'm assuming that is 0.8.1, and that 0.9.1 is for other platforms?)

I tried something that seems to help somewhat. I changed the screen typesetting to Windows GDI instead of DirectX. Wolfenstein 3D plays, but during play crashed, and crashed Basilisk II. I have to get the error message before I can tell you what it is. It hasn't recurred yet. The other detail is now the desktop patterns control panel doesn't work, but my desktop background is a solid color instead of the standard "gray".

OK. Playing Warcraft II caused the error to recurr. The program displayed the title screen to the game (color instead of grayscale) and when it finished the error occured. The titlebar to the error says "Abnormal termination at 0x00000000", and the message is "Unhandled exception occurred. Basilisk II is shutting down."
