Hello Adrian, It is interesting that you are asking for features in an area for which I just added additional documentation (the online manual "Automatic Recycling" chapter). In writing that chapter on how to recycle tapes, I realized that there is a need for more flexibility in deciding when not to use a tape, so I have planned two new records to be added in version 1.27: VolumeUsePeriod (possibly VolumeUseDuration) VolumeUseTimes (possibly MaximumVolumeJobs) Both of these records would be added to the Pool record, and possibly the Media record (same as VolumeRetention). I.e. the Pool is the default, but you can modify it on a Volume by Volume basis if so desired. The first would be a period that you define that specifies the maximum time (duration) that the volume can be written counting from the first write. Thus if you set it to 1d (one day), you can write as many jobs as you want, but after 1 day, Bacula will mark it "Used" or something so that it will no longer be written, but can be recycled. The second record would be the number of Jobs that could be written to the tape before it would be marked "Used" and recycled (if recycling is enabled). Both of these could be used at the same to giving you the control that you want (I think). Both are relatively easy to implement so I think I can get them in 1.27. Will this give you what you want? Do you have any preference for the names (I think I am leaning towards VolumeUseDuration and MaximumVolumeJobs. On security, I've just received a pile of books for use in implementing secure communications (SSL) and sometime later encrypted data, and I see that SHA1, being a 160 bit hash as compared with the 128 bits of MD5, is much more secure, so at some time in the future, I will switch to using SHA1 for the "standard" authentication scheme in place of the current MD5. Best regards, Kern PS: Thanks for the kind words. PSS: Comments from anyone on the VolumeUseDuration and MaximumVolumeJobs would be welcome.
