The windows bacula-fd does have the ability to turn debugging on.  You can do it from the server most easily with the command
setdebug client=<clientname>
Thank you very much, Bob.
I tried to enter the command above in BAT on the Ubuntu server and after a bit of Googling, it looks like I got the syntax right.
At level 50, it comes back after a few seconds with "connecting to Client hummer-fd at HUmmer:9102"
"Failed to connect to Client"
Same thing if I bump the level to 200

Unfortunately it doesn't tell me much more than what I already knew :-)
If I check all the boxes in Settings -> Preferences -> Debug
With setdebug client=hummer-fd  level=200
I get in the BAT window:

Hope this make sense to you or someone else - it does not tell me a lot -
and yes, bacula-fd is running on Hummer, though just as for bconsole & bat, I had to move the bacula-fd.conf file to c:\ProgramData\Bacula

If you've noticed a pattern of something going wrong you can then report the issue and include the debug output, with a lot less effort than trying to re-build bacula's windows fd.
Well, right now it looks like a toss up between making the Windows end work and re-compiling under Linux ;-)
By now, I have spent as much time and effort on either one :-(
From all the write-ups it seemed like a piece of cake.

Believe me, I don't go looking for this sort of trouble if I can avoid it - but bacula looked like the answer to my needs and I do have a bit of experience with building app mainly under  Win32, but also some under Ubuntu - if the automake and configure magic does its thing.
