I just came across BackupPC today. I think I may give it a try as an
alternative to Amanda. Amanda has a nice feature set, but the interface
can be awkward. BackupPC's web-base interface looks like it will more
intuitive and easy to use.
I didn't see this in the documentation, so I'll contribute it: Based on
my experience with Amanda, BackupPC should easily be able to backup and
restore OS X machines.
All you need to do is use "hfstar" instead of the standard tar on the OS
X client machine. I've verified that the backup/restore process works
with hfstar on my own machine (with an actual disk crash,
HFStar is easily installable as through Fink:
