It won't work read-only.
It would be a good idea to have an option to freeze BackupPC
so its doesn't do any backups or expire old backups.
You should be able to accomplish this by adding an "exit" near the
top of BackupPC_dump. But I agree this should be a documented
feature rather than a hack.
