Hi! I've been using backuppc for ages (more than 3 years) on my home network, and it works just lovely, However, after upgrading my server to latest ubuntu (11.04) the localhost backup fails. The error is "no ping response". All the other machines work fine, but not the server itself. I have not changed anything in the setup. When I manually ping as the user backuppc, that is set to execute the backup, there is a ping response. Successful pings with "localhost", 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.1.1. But still the backuppc backup fails - no ping response. I did find that backuppc had no rights to rsync in the sudoers file, so I added the line: backuppc ALL=NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/rsync as given in the documentation and identical to what I have on all other hosts. But still same error: no ping response. Any suggestions on how to approach this? Backuppc is version 3.2.0-3ubuntu4. Best, Magnus |

I had exactly the same problem, but I found this bug report - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/backuppc/+bug/782890 It appears that BackupPC under Ubuntu 11.04 has started to use IPv6 when pinging localhost. The problem with this is that the 'Ping6Path' variable within my config.pl is not defined, so BackupPC is failing to successfully ping localhost. The solution is to simply add the following to config.pl: $Conf{Ping6Path} = '/bin/ping6'; undefined Hope this helps. I see where the problem is. > [...] > It appears that BackupPC under Ubuntu 11.04 has started to use IPv6 when > pinging localhost. It's certainly interesting to know that the cause is a brainless bug in the Ubuntu backuppc package. Aside from that, it's not really on-topic here. > The solution is to simply add the following to config.pl: > > $Conf{Ping6Path} = '/bin/ping6'; undefined Well, 1.) Unquoted string "undefined" may clash with future reserved word 2.) Useless use of a constant in void context 3.) Unless that's the last non comment line in config.pl, you should even get a syntax error. 4.) It's not a solution, it's a workaround. For localhost, testing whether it is up before proceeding is somewhat optional. Experience indicates that it usually is. For other hosts, you need to use whatever the transport will (strictly, you should use TCP syn probes to the correct port). There's not much point in requiring a working IPv6 path to the client host if ssh is going to use (or would fall back to using) an IPv4 connection. Regards, Holger |

Hi! It is called localhost in the /etc/backuppc/hosts file: host dhcp user moreUsers localhost 0 backuppc Then there is a localhost.pl. And yes, I can ping "localhost" as user backuppc: $ ping localhost PING localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.028 ms 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.029 ms 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=0.028 ms Magnus 2011-05-17 22:54, Bowie Bailey skrev: > On 5/17/2011 4:46 PM, Magnus Larsson wrote: >> Hi! >> >> I've been using backuppc for ages (more than 3 years) on my home >> network, and it works just lovely, >> >> However, after upgrading my server to latest ubuntu (11.04) the >> localhost backup fails. Hi, Magnus Larsson wrote on 2011-05-17 23:08:58 +0200 [Re: [BackupPC-users] No ping respons on localhost after ubuntu?upgrade]: > [context dropped as I have not yet implemented un-toppost.pl] > localhost 0 backuppc > > Then there is a localhost.pl. regardless of why it doesn't work (which does sound weird), there is no benefit to pinging localhost. You couldn't even *try* to ping it if it were down. In localhost.pl, try $Conf {PingCmd} = '&{sub {0}}'; which is a simple way of saying $Conf {PingCmd} = '/bin/true'; except that it doesn't need a child process to figure out the value of true - Perl is perfectly capable of doing that itself without the result being in any way inferior. If your problem persists (or changes in nature), maybe at least we'll get a better indication of the cause (error message). In that case, please give more detail on your localhost.pl file and what your log files say. Regards, Holger |
