Hello When backing up a certain host running Debian stable I get some comprehensi= ble directories like /home or /srv but most directories or files are like this =16&=0C=ED=CAH =0F=E0=1B=86=E0,GF=E4T=18=1C=FEw=DDh Cp=B6?=13=D1S=18=E1=11= =9Dk=90hU=B9:!=A4=86WB. This can be localhost, so no encryption seems to be involved. The files and= directories might belong to mount points different from /home or /srv or /= lost+found, the readable ones. Greetings, I'm trying to create my first backup. I'm running BackupPC-2.1.1 on a Mandriva 2005LE box and have modified config.pl as seems right (using sudo and tarCreate as suggested in the docs), have the web interface setup, and the backuppc service is running. However, nothing seems to be happening, i.e. there's no sign that backuppc is doing anything. I expect to see disk activity, but there is none. What should I look at to determine what's happening? Here's what I _can_ tell about the state of backuppc: "ps alxw" shows 3 processes running: /usr/bin/perl /opt/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC -d /usr/bin/perl /opt/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_trashClean /usr/bin/perl /opt/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_dump osage Checking the log file I see: 2005-07-30 11:00:01 full backup started for directory / Querying the web interface for my machine (named 'osage') I see: Host osage Backup Summary This PC has never been backed up!! * This PC is used by relson. * Last status is state "backup in progress" as of 7/30 11:00. * Pings to osage have succeeded 5 consecutive times. If I go to "Start Full Backup", the web interface tells me: Backup requested on osage by backuppc Reply from server was: error: backup of osage is already running So, backuppc seems to be running but nothing is happening. AARRGH! Before anyone wastes any time on my post- I have checked again and found a syntax error in my specification of the DHCP range in the main config file. I probably don't even need it there but someone may add an entry in the hosts file at some later stage. I am now reasonably confident that my typo caused the error message and backuppc to abort. Now to further examine an apparent race condition when my fast server attempts to backup a slow WINDOZE laptop! Cheers, Dave |

I'm setting up a new subnet with BackupPC. I've used BackupPC before with great success & so know a reasonable amount, but am not an expert by any means! I've got the latest version with the Server a 64bit Suse 9.3 Prof installation with latest patches. BackupPC is dying every night when it wakess up to do backups. The error message discovered in the log is: "Can't use string ("-99") as a HASH ref while "strict refs" in use at /usr/lcoal/backuppc/bin/BackupPC line 1624." Now, this chunk of code seems to be going through DHCP strings [line 1624]. My DHCP server is setup with a range of 192.168.0.80 through 99. The same DHCP range is specified in the main config file. However, no DHCP is specified in the Hosts file. So,presumably, it should be trying to use NMBLOOKUP. Standalone backups work fine. There are two WINDOZE clients. The one with 192.168.0.99 is offline and 98 is online when the error happens. Anyone have any clues? Cheers & thanks, Dave [Australia] |

I think all you really need is a scripted fdisk/mkfs to prepare the new drive before you restore the tar image(s) to the filesystem(s). Rather than build a complete live linux distribution that would be a monster to maintain, I'd rather have a small program that you could run to create such a script on each client (mondo must already have something like this) and store it using some convention for the name. Then you could boot with a current Knoppix or similar live CD, pull a copy of the script from BackupPC's web interface and run it. With that approach I'd probably issue ssh commands from the script or manually from the knoppix box to generate the tar image and pipe it to a local tar, but it might also work to pull the old ssh keys through the web browser, start the knoppix sshd, and let backuppc push the restore back. The only other step is setting up grub or lilo to make the system boot. If you know what you are doing you can do all this by hand but you may need a hint about the old partition layout and when you are trying to recover a needed system you can use all the help you can get so a fully-scripted version would be nice. -- Les Mikesell le...@fu... |

I've been wanting to use Mondo Rescue because of its great bare metal restore features, but I like BackupPC's interface and method of backup much better. If BackupPC could integrate the same bare metal restore feature set, with a live cd and without, in my opinion, BackupPC would be just about the killer open source backup application out there. Backuppc with bare metal restore would have everything. David |

Hi to all Backuppcers once again In the light of recent harddrive failures, I'm wondering if you would consider a new feature request for Backuppc, such as creation of backuppc live-CD. I see it as a CD based on any live-cd distro which already exists, and can be some minimalistic one, which on boot 1. asks for a path to Backuppc pool area (can be as advanced as NFS mounted or USB drive) 2. asks for hostname for which to pull backup (if multiple are present in the pool) 3. asks for paritioning for a new drive and assignment of mount points according to the stored in pool for the specified hostname (in the best case it should pull that information from some meta data stored in the pool) 4. partitions the drive 5. restores the information Or the answer to my wish -- "just boot live-CD, partition your drive, make backuppc server able to access your host, start recovery". Yeah - it sounds like an idea but it doesn't work for a single host/backup setup - when backup is stored on another drive in the same computer. so if system fails, you first would need to get backuppc running to restore the thing, thus some live-cd at least with backuppc installation is necessary. Is there such? -- Yaroslav Halchenko Research Assistant, Psychology Department, Rutgers-Newark Office: (973) 353-5440x263 | FWD: 82823 | Fax: (973) 353-1171 101 Warren Str, Smith Hall, Rm 4-105, Newark NJ 07105 Student Ph.D. @ CS Dept. Thank you Michael, The patch helped -- BackupPC_tarCreate doesn't complain now. Perl rulez! (khe khe) Though the question remains: "how repository ended up with incorrect permissions and some files missing": files in /var/www are owned by backuppc and some files are not in the repository :-/ I don't see how that could happen because LOG for backup #28 doesn't show any errors which could lead to such situation. Can you pleaser remind me where information about permissions is stored? as meta inside .z files? I am wondering if there is a way to "regenerate" the data that exists in a file named "backups". It is located in /data/pc/username/. There appears to be an accompanying file named "backups.old". I don't know what happened but my backuppc machine shut down unexpectedly over the weekend and when I looked into getting it running I found that some users had the files mentioned above missing (either one of them or both). As far as I can tell all of the numbered backups still exist in the users directory. Is there a way to retreive the old backup info? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give me. Hi Backuppcers, I have a friend on whos box I've installed backuppc (debian stable 2.1.1-2 version). It had ~backuppc on the same drive as the rest of the data, everynight modified BackupPC_nightly was running rsync -aH to another drive present in the system (40GB -- was enough to accommodate ~backuppc after it was compressed into cpool). At the other times that drive was unmounted for added safety. So, the main drive failed... I had to reinstall the system because I didn't backup /usr /lib but only /home /etc and /var. I've mounted my 40GB drive read-only (it is better to be paranoid a bit at this stage), rsync -aH everything to the main drive and went to restore. The last backup in the system was full backup and #28, previous #27 - incremental. backups were created via tar method (with ssh part of the command line stripped out). After I've "restored" from 28 (/home into /home and /etc and /var into /var/tmp) I've found a weird thing: restored /var/www was missing some files and the owner on all files was set to backuppc.backuppc. Next weird thing happens when I try to restore BOTH /var and etc: backuppc@zaza:~$ /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_tarCreate -h localhost -n 28 -s / -t /var /etc > /var/tmp/28.tar Unable to write to output file (Bad file descriptor) but when I extract /var and /etc separately - everything is fine :-/ backuppc@zaza:/var/tmp/28$ /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_tarCreate -h localhost -n 28 -s / -t /var > /var/tmp/28var.tar Done: 13526 files, 1409963940 bytes, 546 dirs, 248 specials, 0 errors backuppc@zaza:~$ /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_tarCreate -h localhost -n 28 -s / -t /etc > /var/tmp/28etc.tar Done: 2714 files, 27662964 bytes, 1102 dirs, 1052 specials, 0 errors Also #27 seems to contain the files I'm missing in /var/www in #28. So what could cause such problems and how can I debug it more to reveal the source? P.S. Please CC me in reply. -- Yaroslav Halchenko Research Assistant, Psychology Department, Rutgers-Newark Office: (973) 353-5440x263 | FWD: 82823 | Fax: (973) 353-1171 101 Warren Str, Smith Hall, Rm 4-105, Newark NJ 07105 Student Ph.D. @ CS Dept. That sounds like a good way to approach it. I would say it's a fairly logical option to have, so it would be nice to have it implemented as an option in BackupPC itself. Hello, Unlike many other people on this list, who have trouble with files that are too large, I was wondering if it's possible to prevent the backup of files that are, let's say, larger than 10M. I wasn't able to find an option like this in the config file, and I was thinking of just generating the list with another script and giving that list to either tar or rsync. Thank you, Vlad |

Does anybody have any magic perl tricks to catch memory leaks that they'd like to share? John |
