Just a follow-up to my earlier post… it looks to me like this is another bug in smbclient. It seems to be recently discovered:

https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3325

(Interestingly enough, Craig, the person who filed this bug references one of your bug reports, https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563)

Anyone have thoughts on how to get around this issue?

Subject: [BackupPC-users] Restoring large files

Hello,

I’m running BackupPC on Debian Sharge. The version I’m using is backuppc 2.1.1-2sarge2

This is loosely related to a previous topic, where my backups failed with the message ‘Unexpected End of Tar Archive’ whenever a file > 2GB was locked by Windows. I recompiled smbclient and I was able back up.

However, I can’t seem to restore! The restore runs to 2GB and then fails. Here is the log I get when I attempt to restore “Madalyns Personal Folders.pst”, a file that is just slightly larger than 2GB:

Running: /usr/bin/smbclient \\\\ao-pc133\\c\$ -U DOMAIN\\Administrator -E -N -d 1 -c tarmode\ full -Tx -
Running: /usr/share/backuppc/bin/BackupPC_tarCreate -h ao-pc102 -n 48 -s C\$ -t -r /Documents\ and\ Settings/madalynw/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Microsoft/Outlook -p /Documents\ and\ Settings/madalynw/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Microsoft/Outlook/ /Documents\ and\ Settings/madalynw/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/Microsoft/Outlook/Madalyns\ Personal\ Folders.pst
Xfer PIDs are now 17726,17727
Domain=[DOMAIN] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager]
tarmode is now full, system, hidden, noreset, verbose
Error writing remote file
This backup will fail because: Abandoning restore
Abandoning restore
tarCreate: Unable to write to output file (Connection reset by peer)
Restore failed: Abandoning restore

The restore wrote a 2GB file to my hard drive, but stopped there. Obviously, the file was corrupt. As a workaround, I tried simply downloading a zip file… but the zip file was corrupt too. (somehow was malformed, because it didn’t list any contents, even though it was extremely large).

OK, I thought… it’s choking on this large file. Then I tried to restore a directory that was about ~3.5GB full of a bunch of JPEG pictures. The log file is a bit bigger in this case, so it’s attached. Here’s the end, though:

This backup will fail because: abandoning restore
abandoning restore
Abandoning restore
Restore failed: abandoning restore

I again tried downloading a zip file, and it too was corrupt. Directories were listed inside the zip file as if they were files, and they were not able to be extracted.

I found that if I cut the size of the job down I was more likely to succeed. However, I gave up restoring the directory filled with pictures when one of my “chunks” failed, even though it was <1GB. The same problem was shown in the log:

This backup will fail because: abandoning restore
abandoning restore
Abandoning restore
Restore failed: abandoning restore

I have more questions than answers at this point:

 - Am I seeing two different problems, or just one?

 - Could this be related to https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=563

 - Further, am I making a mistake trying to use SMB here? I need restores to be reliable for me, and these failures scare me!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
