My specific application was actually okay with axTLS switching the socket over to blocking under the hood.  In one place, we were using axTLS 1.1.5, which didn't have this yet, but once that got switched to 1.2.7 (and subsequently 1.3.1), things worked for us.

Because things are working for us, I may not have time to look at this for a while, but I like what I hear from your description.  Perhaps one of the libcurl folks can run some quick tests with your new code.  Dan Stenberg is subscribed here, but in case he's busy, I'll post to the libcurl mailing list too.
