I'm trying to use AWstats 2.24 beta and always get the following error:

Error: Couldn't open server log file /var/log/access_log" : No such file or directory.

Setup (/var/lib/apache/cgi-bin/awstats.conf file, web server or logfile permissions) may be wrong.
See README.TXT for informations on how to setup awstats.

I also tried to execute it from the command line and i saw that:

Died at ./awstats.pl line 1350.

I'm not a guru, but those " after the name of the log file sounds really bad to me...

    Try doing this:

    get a nice DOS->UNIX cr/lf convertor
    run your awstats.conf through it to convert it to UNIX
    format
    watch awstats work just fine without adding a " on the end
    of image and log dir and filenames.
    be happy and dance a jig.

    To remove the logfile.log" trailing " problem.. run
    your .conf file through a dos->nix cr/lf convertor.

    I add a fix in 2.24 version (last beta build)to avoid the
    use of a DOS->Unix (CR/LF->LF) translator.
