If you are using an earlier version, try upgrading to Audacity
1.2.0-pre3. This version has much better playback and recording on =
OS X, and is more stable than earlier OS X versions also:

Is "Play other tracks while recording" turned on in the Audio I/O
section of the preferences?
If that doesn't help, please let us know what version of Audacity you're
using, and which operating system.
