Unfortunately it's not possible to remove background sounds with Audacity.
There are shareware and commercial programs which can remove a constant
noise (such as a tape hiss or static) and which can remove record-player
noises like clicks and pops. If you use Windows, CoolEdit 2000 does
noise removal that works pretty well for a cheap shareware program.
Other programs have a "Karaoke" feature which tries to remove either
the background music, or the foreground vocals, but these aren't
Maybe in the future Audacity will support noise removal, but not now.
And no program can completely eliminate all of the sounds you don't
want, any more than you can perfectly remove a person from a photograph.
