I just purchased ION UBS Turntable (ittusb) and I have a Dell Dimension 2400. My question is, do I have to hook up the RCA
cables to my computer? I have checked the back of the computer and I can't find an audio input. I do have a spot for the USB cable, is
that all I need?

The RCA cables are for playing the audio output of the Ion through a
stereo system i.e. as if you were using it as a conventional turntable.
The USB is the only connection you need for recording an LP into
As the Audacity software on the provided CD is sometimes out of date,
it is a good idea to obtain the latest Audacity software 1.2.4 from
You can find out what version of Audacity you have by clicking Help > About
in the program.
As for setting up Audacity after installing the program, what you have to do
is go to Audacity preferences > Audio I/O tab and select the Ion as recording
device and your soundcard as the playback device. If you want to hear
the playback of the turntable while the recording is being made, enable
"Software "Playthrough" on the same tab. Click OK. The mixer toolbar
is then greyed out while the Ion remains selected as recording device;
this is normal. You do not have to first of all select "stereo mix" on this
dropdown as implied by some issues of Ion's software installation guide.
However if you are on Mac OS X, the mixer dropdown is always greyed
out on default source irrespective of the recording device set on the Audio
I/O tab. Hence you may additionally need to set the Ion as the device you
want to record from in Apple Sound and Midi Controller (and if for example
you want to record into Audacity from another source such as your
microphone, you will similarly have to set that as default recording source
in the Apple setup).
Note if you are on Windows and the mixer dropdown is greyed out
even when your soundcard is selected as recording device in Audio I/O
tab, then you need to update your soundcard drivers to the latest ones
from the card or motherboard manufacturer, and be sure not to use
generic Microsoft drivers.
If you have any other difficulties with setting up Audacity to record
with the Ion, please write back and tell us your operating system and
what exactly in the procedure above is causing problems.
