You can add music to an Audacity project by using the Project > Import Audio
command and importing a valid type of audio file that Audacity can support.
Audacity only imports files of type .WAV, .AIFF, .OGG and .MP3, which is why
the MP4 makes a short screech. However if you are on OS X and want to import
an MP4 or M4A file, you can do so by downloading our Beta program (currently
1.3.0). Otherwise you should convert the file you want to import to AIFF within
iTunes before importing it into Audacity. If you set the conversion format in
iTunes Preferences under Advanced > Importing > Import using AIFF encoder
then you have a right click option to convert the file.
When you have edited your podcast in Audacity you are best to export it as an
MP3 as these are compressed and thus suitable for uploading to the Web, and
all your users including those on Windows will be able to listen to them. To
export an MP3 from Audacity you need LAME -see
