You should get a waveform in audacity whilst recording, and be able to play the recording back in audacity afterwards to check it has worked.
Things to check:
Is the sound reaching your computer? If you turn up the line-in in your computer's sound mixer, can you hear the tape recorder?
Have you correctly selected line in as the sound source in audacity ?
Is the recording control (on the audacity mixer toolbar) set appropriately, so that you get the correct level on the VU meters?
