I tried the test, looking great. Many thanks for all your grunts. I'll be doing some more substantial now. The reason for clearing everything (aubitdir, env. vars.) before reinstalling is to test that nothing is missed by the installer and that nothing old and no longer is needed gets left on my system. Under normal circumstances I would not bother. I also see now that, when selecting the full installation, it does indeed install cygwin1.dll which it did not previously.
