The OpenSolaris kernel is the most advanced kernel and offers good Java support, one would only have to write a new AWT implementation. The Solaris userland could be replaced with AROS, making a modified dos.library and exec.library part of the kernel and the primary application interface. DragonFly BSD is also very suitable for the purpose because it already uses a messaging API as the kernel interface. Other alternatives are QNX, Minix and Android, each with its own advantages.
A full Unix operating system could be added as a guest operating system (in the sense of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xen\).
