afaik, they define a XML syntax and allow software using XML as input to =
check that inputs syntax against a DTD and reject it if it fails.
As well i think the DTD allows to specify what values are allowed by =
means of type, ranges and elements.
also afaik not many softwares use DTDs.
But to really get it correct... might be best to take a book :)

In the general they are a necessary addition to xml-definitions in order =
to check field / value input modalities.
