The client could check at start if it can draw with full alpha fast enough to keep the translucency on images (there are several other places where it would be useful too). The test needs to be conservative enough that it is certain that the game does not become unplayable for the system being almost fast enough. Also there needs to be a way to force alpha/bitmask for testing.
