I'm not on the sig, but I presume this is a port that accepts data
without sending any data to the client. While there are a few very
limited uses for this, my concern is that the net result will be people
switching to this port for their IGates.
The APRS IS was designed to be a bidirectional link between RF networks.
Using an rx only port is setting up a one-way IGate. While some might say
this is better than nothing, I'd disagree. When there is no IGate in an
area, local users will notice they are not getting data to the internet,
and be more likely to set one up. If they look on the net and see their
area represented, they assume there is no need for anyone else to set up
It was for this reason that Dale set up port 1314, while provides the
smallest amount of data that still allows an IGate to be a full 2 way
Just as 1313 is very abused by people that do not understand the
architecture of the APRS IS, I fear an rx only port would ultimately
degrade the internet system.
