Thanks for looking into this. This mailing list is the window through
which potential and current users and contributors view Aperture, so
it's really important.

Also, it would be great when searching a subject in the mailing list,
e.g. "license", to have the results viewable by thread. Is there a
way to do that?

there is an interface for mailinglist search
http://sourceforge.net/search/?group_id=150969&type_of_search=mlists

Over at apache.org, they're using Nabble for discussion forums and
Jira for issue tracking. They're very user friendly and effective.
Has Sourceforge ever considered reconsidering its infrastructure and
changing its software? IMHO it's very helpful in increasing
productivity.

I can't really say anything about what sourceforge considered or not :-)

We picked Sourceforge as it is very popular, stable, old, and neutral platform, having no requirements towards copyright or licenses, being open for everyone to pick an account. google code are similar.
They are slower on changes, for example only recently they offered subversion.

Given the complexity of aperture (which is manageable), we are quite ok with the mailinglist, tracker, and wiki.
Many projects do offer a forum or something on extra homepages, managed by the project members.

By the way, why is it that I cannot see these messages in the
Aperture message archive?

Me neither :-/

I checked the admin settings, the list is flagged public.

There is a SF ticket of other projects that experience similar problems:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1820800&group_id=1&atid=200001

I also issued a ticket now

Hello.

I'm Keith Bennett, a member of the Tika team
(http://incubator.apache.org/projects/tika.html), and am interested in
learning more about Aperture. Aperture's scope is much broader than
Tika's, including far more than document parsing.

I'd like to see how Aperture would do the same task as Tika, even
though that would be using just part of its functionality.

To do this, I looked at the sample class at
http://aperture.sourceforge.net/tutorial/extractors.html, but could
not get it to compile successfully. Could the example be updated (for
example, to include the correct import statements) so that it is in a
compilable state? (Or am I doing something wrong?) ? I am getting
two errors:

* DATA cannot be found.
* new RepositoryModel(false); fails because there is apparently no
(boolean) constructor.

I've updated the wikipage example and added it to the SVN. It does
compile. See [1]

Or is there a better way to test Aperture's document parsing
functionality? I want to be able to pass it a URL or InputStream and
get the parse results.

You may also try out the fileinspector example application. The easiest
way to do so is to
1. checkout the latest trunk
2. type 'ant testbuild'
3. go to the bin folder
4. type 'fileinspector'

Then you'll be able to see the output aperture produces for various
files. The full text extracted from a file is stored in the
RDFContainer as a value of the nie:plainTextContent property.
