Hi! I'm new on this list. I'm a system administrator in a small ISP. We have lots of switches several buildings. Sometimes there is power loss in this buildings and our service is stop. The main reason is a fuse going down (is this the correct word?). We will buy one UPS for every switch to decrease the downtime, but we need to know about the power loss. If we doesn't know about it we can't send anyone to the building to turn on the fuse. We have only Ethernet access in this buildings (fiber/UTP). So this is the scenario. I saw about 1-2 years ago a Blackbox made "serial<->Ethernet converter". This device has got an IP address and when I telnet to the 7000 TCP port I can access the RS232 port on the device. I can communicate with a modem and a Linux machine (getty) with this toy. I plan to use this solution (UPS<-serial cable->[box]<-Eth->[apcupsd]) because it's very cheap comparable to the external SmartSlot device + SmartSlot Ethernet Management card (this more expensive than to UPS itself :-(). Will this work? Support apcupsd this? Or the UPS communicate a different way on the serial line? Or it isn't supported by the apcupsd but it can work with self-made programs? Thanks for any idea, Arpad Kunszt PS: Sorry for my bad english. :-( |
