I think that running ANUGA 'in the cloud' is just like running ANUGA on your desktop. The real problem is organizing images, getting your image to access data and returning the results. I have put some information on the AIFDR wiki [http://www.aifdr.org/projects/system_administration/wiki/EctwoAdmin]. This is mainly how to get started with Amazon, how to create a new image and how python fits into all this. It's Linux oriented, not Windows. The hard bits about running ANUGA on Amazon are: . Understanding this new thing - images, S3, etc . Creating a suitable image (it's like installing Linux) . Writing code that starts and sends data to the image . Actually running ANUGA . Getting the results You can use Amazon (and the others) to do anything you want. People use Amazon to run small web servers. I wouldn't be surprised if some shadowy government agencies use Amazon and the others to do cryptography stuff. It's probably not cost-effective to do BitCoin mining on Amazon. As to costs: I ran a few large ANUGA runs but mainly was doing small runs to get all the infrastructure running. In one month I had a maximum cost of about $80. YMMV. If you want to get into this sort of thing, then just start with Amazon. There's quite a bit of documentation around, you start with a credit card and you can manage costs well. As Amazon says, if you don't use it, you don't pay for it. That means there are no ongoing monthly service costs. I haven't used Amazon for a month and my current bill is $0.00. The code to run on Amazon is here [https://github.com/AIFDR/tsudat2/tree/master/run_tsudat]. The files are: ec2_bootstrap.py - code on the running instance that handles getting data and running ec2_run_tsudat.py ec2_run_tsudat.py - code that is passed to the instance along with the data and that actually runs ANUGA run_tsudat_amazon.py - code that runs on any machine and starts an instance Note that the above code is for a tsunami inundation and does things that a more 'normal' run doesn't need.
