Hello list, Jaroslav; I've had a just barely working sound system since I switched to the 2.6.x kernels, mostly from some residdual oss stuff, so I figured it was time to update it with the full alsa-1.0.4 kit. TvTime in particular had very low, and uncontrolled audio levels. Kmix could make it loud enough to hear, and that was about it. Gnomeradio has been segfaulting too. I've followed the instructions as written on the web page titled "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture - via82xx, at <http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/templete.php?company=VIA&card=&chip=via82c686a&module=via82xx> for installing the drivers, lib, and utils. 1. The link to Planet CCRMA for RedHat seems to be dead. 2.'modinfo soundcore' returns modinfo: could not find module soundcore However, if I ask it just for 'sound' I get this: [root@coyote root]# modinfo sound license: GPL description: OSS Sound subsystem author: Hannu Savolainen, et al. vermagic: 2.6.5 preempt K7 gcc-3.2 depends: 3. after making all the sound related stuff into modules (I did have it all built in), it appears none of them are loadable, and with all the entries added to /etc/modules.conf, there is no mention of any of this in /var/log/dmesg or in /var/log/messages after a reboot. 4. [root@coyote root]# modprobe --version module-init-tools version 3.0-pre4 It appears that this particular version of these tools don't know where to look for the sound stuff. BUT, it loads the usb & firewire stuff automaticly just fine, and an lsmod returns: [root@coyote root]# lsmod Module Size Used by eth1394 21124 0 ohci1394 35712 0 ieee1394 321872 2 eth1394,ohci1394 pl2303 16708 0 usbserial 28324 1 pl2303 5: I made a /root/.asoundrc file also, but the instructions contain the path to that as /home/xxx/.asoundrc. What does the 'xxx' stand for? 6: My sound modules available are: [root@coyote root]# tree /lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/sound /lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/sound |-- acore | |-- oss | | |-- snd-mixer-oss.ko | | `-- snd-pcm-oss.ko | |-- seq | | |-- oss | | | `-- snd-seq-oss.ko | | |-- snd-seq-device.ko | | |-- snd-seq-midi-event.ko | | |-- snd-seq-midi.ko | | `-- snd-seq.ko | |-- snd-page-alloc.ko | |-- snd-pcm.ko | |-- snd-rawmidi.ko | |-- snd-rtctimer.ko | |-- snd-timer.ko | `-- snd.ko |-- core | |-- oss | `-- seq | `-- oss |-- drivers | `-- mpu401 | `-- snd-mpu401-uart.ko |-- oss | |-- ac97_codec.ko | |-- sound.ko | |-- uart401.ko | `-- via82cxxx_audio.ko `-- pci |-- ac97 | `-- snd-ac97-codec.ko `-- snd-via82xx.ko My /etc/modules.conf and .asoundrc files are attached. I just changed the alias in the #OSS-free protion of modules.conf from soundcore to sound, and when I execute that long multi-modprobe line, it takes a while, and an lsmod now shows this: Module Size Used by snd_seq_oss 37120 0 snd_seq_midi_event 7936 1 snd_seq_oss snd_seq 57520 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event snd_pcm_oss 53700 0 snd_mixer_oss 19776 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_via82xx 25824 0 snd_pcm 99456 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx snd_timer 26368 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm snd_ac97_codec 65156 1 snd_via82xx snd_page_alloc 11332 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 8128 1 snd_via82xx snd_rawmidi 25664 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 8388 3 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_rawmidi snd 56708 12 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device eth1394 21124 0 ohci1394 35712 0 ieee1394 321872 2 eth1394,ohci1394 pl2303 16708 0 usbserial 28324 1 pl2303 Do I need to put that line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local? If not there, where? So thats progress & apparently confirms that my modprobe is sufficiently up to date. However, at this point, the only working sound is the consoles beeper speaker. What do I need to do to restore full function? -- Cheers, Gene "There are four boxes to be used in defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo.
