Touch difficult to say with the relative lack of detail, but I have a couple thoughts. First, you should include the method you are using to record, so that we can see more detail. My first guess, if you hear a kind of white-noise hiss, is that you have a byte order problem. lame uses, I believe, a "-x" option to switch byte ordering. My second guess is that you have the device attenuated or off--check your mixer settings and make sure that the record device is not muted.
