Try using hw:0,1 and you will see, that only one application can play sound (run two copies of "aplay -D hw:0,1 file.wav") > Another thing that let me know that it works (the hardware) is that > using Windows I can record perfectly. With ALSA I play sound on all my 4 channels (I don't have more speakers now ;-) in surround. Just unmute (in alsamixer) "Line-in as surround" and "Duplicate front", than adjust volumes of "Surround" (also unmute this control) and "3d control - Depth". There is similar control "Mic as Center/LFE". Take a look at it. These are equivalents to Windows configuration tool, which lets you switch number of channels to use. > And finally when I record using arecord -t wav file.wav. and then go to [...] > When I finally stop recording (with CTRL+C), it says: > closed > When I try to listen with a play file.wav, I just hear ... nothing. > So, I'm sure it works, but it isn't properlly configurated. Moreover I don't have cable to connect it to Line-in, so I tried to capture some sound from my CD. It is easy. First of all, choose what to capture from (in alsamixer press Space key on chosen control, f. ex. CD). Then press Space on "Capture" control and adjust recording level (cursor keys). I think that should help. Try to experiment with choosing devices to capture from, muting/unmuting necessary devices (by pressing M key) and adjusting playback/recording levels with cursor keys.
