Hello, I'm using alsa on a linux from scratch system for my via8233 chipset on the KT3 Ultra motherboard. I'm using a cvs version of alsa. The drivers seem to work -- my speakers play, alsa mixer runs, etc. But no matter what I do I can't get my microphone to make a sound! It's unmuted in alsamixer, and so is the 20 dB boost channel (which, however, doesn't appear to have volume adjust). I've also tried the mic in linein, but still can't get any output from it. I've set it to capture on both ports, if that makes a difference, but I don't think so -- the problem is that the mic isn't recognizing sounds -- that is, they aren't getting to the computer, or at least not to the speakers.??? I checked my motherboard manual and found that the three ports to sound can be used for 4 or 6 channel output instead of line out, line in, mic. I thought maybe alsa was mistakenly trying to use the mic line as an output port, but plugging the speakers in there didn't yield any output. I've searched google, this mailing list, and plenty of docs. I've found lots of people who have asked similar questions ("can't get the mic to make a sound"), but they are invariably unanswered. I already asked once myself... does this mean that everybody ignores this question because the answer is supposed to be obvious, or is it just something that can't be answered -- mics don't work in linux/alsa??? arecord, incidentally, works fine when capturing from cd-rom. when capturing from mic, it just records a blank sound (sometimes there is some static). what am I missing!???
