Dear list, I have an issue getting the optical connection on the Asus Xonar STX working in my system. The molex is connected, the card is found by the OS (Debian Wheezy), and the modules are loaded. I can see the device, and the alsamixer is available. In there, I unmuted the spdif/tos channel already, however, when I try to play to the tos connection using the aplay command, or VLC, I see no light at all coming from the cable or the port. The config (please disregard the USB, that one is working fine, but I want to switch over to TOS): aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: M20 [Meitner USB Audio 2.0], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: STX [Xonar STX], device 0: Multichannel [Multichannel] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: STX [Xonar STX], device 1: Digital [Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 aplay -L null Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture) pulse PulseAudio Sound Server default:CARD=M20 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio Default Audio Device sysdefault:CARD=M20 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio Default Audio Device front:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio Front speakers surround40:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio 4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers surround41:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio 4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround50:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio 5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers surround51:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio 5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround71:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio 7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers iec958:CARD=M20,DEV=0 Meitner USB Audio 2.0, USB Audio IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output default:CARD=STX Xonar STX, Multichannel Default Audio Device sysdefault:CARD=STX Xonar STX, Multichannel Default Audio Device front:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel Front speakers surround40:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel 4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers surround41:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel 4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround50:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel 5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers surround51:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel 5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround71:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel 7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers iec958:CARD=STX,DEV=0 Xonar STX, Multichannel IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output My question: how do I play to the optical link so that I actually see the light coming on? thank you. What is the output of "amixer contents -c 1"? Shouldn't the red light be on regardless of mixer settings? Regards, Clemens |

Hendrik-Jan Heins wrote: > numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='IEC958 Playback Switch' > : values=off This must be unmuted. (And alsamixer renames this to "S/PDIF" because nobody knows what "IEC958" means.) > numid=11,iface=MIXER,name='Analog Input Monitor Playback Switch' This do not need to be enabled unless you actually want monitoring. Hi Clemens, please apologise my stupid question, but HOW do I unmute this one? (I have had some trouble with the naming all the time with aplay -D as well) thanks, Hendrik-Jan 2013/8/26 Clemens Ladisch <cla...@go...>: > Hendrik-Jan Heins wrote: >> numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='IEC958 Playback Switch' >> : values=off > > This must be unmuted. > > (And alsamixer renames this to "S/PDIF" because nobody knows > what "IEC958" means.) > >> numid=11,iface=MIXER,name='Analog Input Monitor Playback Switch' > > This do not need to be enabled unless you actually want monitoring. > > > Regards, > Clemens |

right, I did that, but that did not turn on the light.... Even though my hardware is completely different I will point out this thing anyway, maybe it helps. USB Audio and Asus Xonar Essence One. VLC player and 44Khz files (flac, mp3, wav). The problem is that with VLC in play the Xonar does not turn on the LED which indicates the frequency, therefore does not hook the correct frequency, and do not hear anything I did some little 'tests and I noticed this: - The Xonar is correctly working - No frequency info come out to the Xonar when it begins to play a file at 44Khz - If I play a file with different frequency (96 or 192 Khz) the frequency change information comes to Xonar, is activated the LED of the correct frequency and start to play correctly - If I back to play a 44Khz file the frequency change work correctly - From this moment everything is working properly. >From what I could understand VLC (but not only) does not send the first frequency information. Until there is a change in frequency the player does not send the information of the frequency. To track change, if the new file frequency is the same, the player still does not send the information of the frequency. At the first frequency change everything aligns. It seems that the ALSA driver (of the USB/Audio in my case) does not send the first frequency information, and the Xonar is still waiting it. I found this in my configuration. Can be helpful? In my experiences it's as Clemens said, there always should be light, but ... perhaps your card does provide optical and coaxial SPDIF and you need to set some jumpers on the board?! Just a shot in the dark. My card, a professional sound card, does provide ADAT, this is optical and at the same time it does provide SPDIF coaxial, but I can set it, to use the optical ADAT IOs, to become optical SPDIF IOs ... IIRC ;), I don't need SPDIF. I remember that a blind user couldn't get SPDIF working for his Envy24 card, using alsamixer. Since I've got Envy24 cards installed as MIDInterfaces, I used the GUI for those cards and compared it with alsamixer. The blind user struggled hours and couldn't get SPDIF working, while it took just a few seconds, when I used the GUI mixer and compared it with the settings for alsamixer and then sent him what t do by email. IMO alsamixer sometimes is hard to understand ;). The blind user, that blind that he does use Braille, but not completely blind user, was able to notice a red light, but there anyway was no sound, so I guess, if there's no light, something might be fishy. But again, just a shot in the dark. Regards, Ralf |

Hi Ralf, thank you for your input. I am quite sure there "should" be light. The card is specified for this. I will check the connections again. Maybe I messed up with the molex in some way. best, Hendrik-Jan 2013/8/23 Ralf Mardorf <ral...@al...>: > On Fri, 2013-08-23 at 17:55 +0200, Hendrik-Jan Heins wrote: >> to be honest, this is the first time ever I am trying to use TOS an a >> card, so I have no idea. > > In my experiences it's as Clemens said, there always should be light, > but ... > > perhaps your card does provide optical and coaxial SPDIF and you need to > set some jumpers on the board?! I was thinking the same... in my 5 days of silence I returned the card and received a new one. I will try again today. Thank you for the pointers Rene, i will try aplay only as that seems to be the best way to get this clear. Hi All, ok, issue solved: I installed a new card today (RMA procedure), switched spdif on, and that was it! So it looks like my issue was faulty hardware. Thanks a lot for your help an support! No it is not. The light switches on as soon as you start playing sound. As long as you are not playing, there is no light. best, Hendrik-Jan 2013/9/2 Clemens Ladisch <cla...@go...>: > Hendrik-Jan Heins wrote: >> ok, issue solved: I installed a new card today (RMA procedure), >> switched spdif on, and that was it! >> So it looks like my issue was faulty hardware. > > Just for the record: on a working card, the red light is always on? > > > Regards, > Clemens |
