Hi, I'm having trouble getting a SB0410 card to produce sound. The card has been placed in a PCI-X slot since the system, a supermicro 6034H-X8R (Intel E7520), only has PCI-X slots. OS is SuSE 9.2, which stock comes with alsa 1.0.6 and kernel 2.6.8. That version recognizes the card and wants to use the snd-audigyls driver, which doesnt want to load. So I downloaded the alsa 1.0.10 drivers, alsa then wants to use the snd-ca0106 driver, which as I understand is correct. However this driver also does not want to load. It complains about not being able to load other modules (snd_pcm etc), and prints "disagrees about version" messages. (recompiling the kernel to make sure kernel source, compiler etc etc all matched did not make a difference) So I went one version back and tried 1.0.9b. That version of snd-ca0106 does load fine. However, although the card is apparently there for programs to use, it does not produce any sound (alsamixer not muted of course) whatsoever. An strace of aplay playing the test.wav showed it kept hanging on a poll() call. I also upgraded alsa-lib and alsa-utils but that doesnt make a difference. Any advice and/or help would be very much appreciated. Esger |

How did you upgrade to 1.0.9? In my case, with an SB0310, still supported by snd-ca0106 driver, I made these, functioning for both 1.0.9 and 1.0.10, with a rh el derivate: - get the source for your running kernel - recompile it enabling sound under device drivers--> sound, but disabling alsa. NOTE: change extraversion line inside Makefile, so you don't override your running kernel when you install I know rh base distros but not very well latest suse... - install the new kernel and modules, but don't reboot - download 1.0.10 drivers in a temp dir. - follow instructions as in http://alsa.opensrc.org/AlsaBuild2.6 step 1] basically ./configure --with-kernel=3D<source_kernel_tree_path> --with-build=3D<source_kernel_tree_path> make make install alsa modules will now be placed under /lib/modules/<your new kernel tag>/..= . setup your new kernel with initrd if necessary and reboot with new kernel and see the result HIH, Gianluca 2005/11/29, Esger Abbink <esg...@ve...>: > > Hi, > > I'm having trouble getting a SB0410 card to produce sound. Thanks for the tip, the first time I indeed didnt disable alsa in the kernel config. But I just tried that as well. Doesnt make a difference unfortunately. And I still cant get 1.0.10 to even load its modules?? Esger (Also, since just now I compiled alsa without specifying --with-cards=ca0106, I noticed alsa 1.0.9b wont compile completely with kernel 2.6.14.2. It complains about a missing URB_ASYNC_UNLINK?) Kernel 2.6.14.2 comes with ALSA 1.0.10-rc1. So you're actually trying to downgrade ALSA to an older version which is not supported. Just use the ALSA that comes with kernel 2.6.14.2. If it does not work file a bug report. Lee |

See below 2005/11/29, Esger Abbink <esg...@ve...>: > > Hi Gianluca, > > yes, I got that one through the list just fine. So I dont think gmail > addresses are banned, but I'm just on the list since this afternoon so > what > do I know ;) but I wrote to you and to the list, so I think you received the e-mail directed to you. Did you mean the PCI-X or passthrough e-mail, or did you receive both? regarding 1.0.10, it builds fine but when I try to load it, it fails. It > complains about not being able to load other modules (snd_pcm etc) and > prints > messages about missing symbols (I think) and "disagrees about version" > several times. It would help to have exact complete log message. Eventually seeing in /var/log/messages or trying to reload the snd-ca0106 module What kernel are you using, the one from SuSe recompiled or the kernel.orgstandard? Can you write your /etc/modprobe.conf contents for audio? I think I saw a remark somewhere that the URB_ define was removed somewhere= , > so probably this kernel and alsa version are incompatible. I don't know. |

While, if you want to see for a particular recent kernel that you have not installed yet, and you want to crosscheck, see if ChangeLog-2.6* at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ contain something related to alsa updates. For example http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.14 contains [ALSA] version 1.0.10rc1 and the other *ChangeLog-2.6.14.x *files have no mention about further version updates |

Ok, I compiled again using the kernel alsa. That 1.0.10 module loads, but I still have the same problem. No sound is produced and stracing aplay playing a wav shows it hanging in either a poll() call or while open()ing /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p. (if anyone's interested in the actual trace, I'll be happy to provide it) Concerning filing a bug report: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/ seems to be down/unreachable? Esger By the way: I did already try the latest 2.6.8 from novell/suse. That one didnt work either. It also doesnt have the ca0106 driver yet. > > Kernel 2.6.14.2 comes with ALSA 1.0.10-rc1. Yes, the open() call should have had me think of that myself.. If artsd is running aplay hangs on open(), but if artsd isnt running it still hangs on the poll () call. Just to be sure I just tried to play something using a different player (amarok) as well. With an open (hanging) aplay, amarok plays just fine. Nothing is heard of course, but the equalizer shows something and it finishes playing also. With nothing else using sound, amarok 'hangs' also (glowing play button). troubleshooting output: cat /proc/asound/version -> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10rc1 (Mon Sep 12 08:13:09 2005 UTC). grep VERSION_STR /usr/include/alsa/version.h -> #define SND_LIB_VERSION_STR "1.0.9" cat /proc/asound/cards -> 0 [CA0106 ]: CA0106 - CA0106 Live! 7.1 24bit [SB0410] at 0x3000 irq 233 /dev/sndstat doesnt exist cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat -> Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.10rc1 emulation code) Kernel: Linux pipe 2.6.14.2 #4 SMP PREEMPT Wed Nov 30 11:43:20 CET 2005 i686 Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 10: ALSA emulation Card config: Live! 7.1 24bit [SB0410] at 0x3000 irq 233 Audio devices: 0: CA0106 (DUPLEX) Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Timers: 7: system timer Mixers: 0: mixer00 The /dev/snd directory contains quite a lot of device files, seems ok. The correct answer is right in there. Just make sure the alsa-driver version matches the alsa-lib version. |

Actually, I do make a point of reading (documentation). I cant quote it unfortunately, but I seem to recall having read that the driver and library versions do not have to match per se. But granted, that might not have been official documentation. Also the troubleshooting page says: "check that the version is at least 1.0.4, and usually it is best if it matches the driver version". Not that it's required. However, if it's best, it's certainly worth the try obviously. Unfortunately, it doesnt make difference. same problem.. > > It actually helps if you actually real the trouble shooter. The > correct answer is right in there.
