Reposting my forum posting <https://sourceforge.net/community/forum/topic.php?id=4408> as a tracker item, now that the new tracker has replaced the old one:

So today, I finally had a chance to try out the spiffy new "Mark as duplicate" feature. Sadly, it seems to only close the item, and added a pre-made text to it as comment. At least as far as I could tell. That's pretty useless, IMO. It didn't even set the "Resolution" to "Duplicate" :-(.

What I *really* would want from such a feature is this:

* Add a canned response, possibly similar to the one you use right now
* Change the resolution state to "duplicate"
* Delete (not close) the item (though closing is fine by me, too)
* Add a canned comment to the *other* tracker item (the "original" one), saying something like "Item #1234 was closed a duplicate of this item"
* Most importantly, in both of these "canned" responses, the item ID should be a hyperlink so that I can just click on it to get to the original/duplicate item.

Also: What is the purpose of the "Reason:" field, I wonder? The reason, obviously, is that the item is a duplicate, so why this field? I always either leave it blank (which leads to a somewhat weird looking canned comment, saying "Reason:" ) or enter "duplicate". IMO, you should either get rid of it, or at least make it so that leaving it empty is handled nicely.

Discussion

  • Max,

Okay, noted. I will discuss this with the team in the morning and from there, we will likely escalate this as a Request For Enhancement (RFE).

If you need anything else, please post a response to this request.

    Cheers!,

  • Hi Max,

I have looked this over. A couple of things. Once I set an item to closed and resolution was duplicate, in the browse page for the Resolution column, this showed as duplicate.

As for the Canned Response, etc., I think that is a really good idea. I'm not sure if the engineering team was looking for that to be something folks could wire up if they wanted via something like Grease Monkey - which we use.

I believe that this is something we'll need to escalate as a Request For Enhancement (RFE). Let me know how you want to proceed.

If you need anything else, please post a response to this request.

I just tested it again, with this artifact: <https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2717226&group_id=2438&atid=102438>

I only used the "Duplicate" feature and made no changes afterwards. Notice the following:

    * the "Resolution" field still has value "None", and not "Duplicate".
    * the ID of the other tracker item is not a hyperlink
    * there is no "comment" on the other tracker item, the main reason why a "Duplicate" feature would be useless.
    * And there is a pointless reason field. What should the reason be other than "Closed because this is a duplicate" ?

A good "duplicate" feature is IMO important and one of the major things missing from the SF.net bug tracker, which virtually everything out there has. Sadly, the current "Duplicate" feature is only wasting screen estate: It is exactly equivalent to inserting a new comment, and closing the item. Trivially to script with Grease Monkey.

If, however, the features I suggest above are implement, it would actually becomes useful ;-).

And yeah, it should be moved on the RFE tracker.

  • Max,

Okay, I see that. That's pretty straight forward. Not sure why that's happening, so I'm going to escalate that to the engineering team.

If you need anything else, please post a response to this request.
