Project News for myLANsite - lanparty organisation

  • What happens with myLANsite next?

I received lots of emails with all the same question:
"What happened to myLANsite? Is the project down?"
No - It is definitely not!

It is just the unlikely case, that the webserver broke down and i really did not have the chance and the time to set up the website again (and all data is lost, anyway).
You may have noticed, that I meanwhile released a new version, myLANsite 1.6b. This is now finally the first Beta release which took myLANsite out of its Alpha stage. Quite a few lanparties (especially in germany) are using myLANsite.

But I am not very happy with the current stage of my project. Maybe you remember a newspost on mylansite.org where I wrote about rewriting myLANsite for the next version. There is already a first (_very_ first) draft version of mylansite2 available here at sf.net. But I saw, that this has no point. Why should I rewrite things, that already exists? There are so many very good OpenSource Content Management Systems which take half the workload off me.

So I decided to rewrite myLANsite. But it will not be a standalone CMS like it was before. myLANsite will be a component (well, a set of components and modules) for the very famous OpenSource CMS Mambo (http://www.mamboserver.com/). It provides a very stable backend and there are already lots of modules available (poll, userlogin, board, news, ...). So I can concentrate on brining you the best (and only) lanparty modules for it.

I would be pleased if some of you took some time to read my post in the Mambo forums (http://forum.mamboserver.com/showthread.php?t=28059) and reply with their comments and possible concerns about this step.

Would you still be using myLANsite if it is a component for Mambo? I think, this helps myLANsite a lot being more famous in the future. You wonder, how you benefit from this step? Well, there are a few things:
-myLANsite will be 100% multilanguage capable
-The code will be _lots_ more stable and have less bugs
-It will be surrounded by the already existing, very huge community of mambo
-You can use all of the hundreds of modules and components already available for mambo (want an onlineshop? easy! A guestbook? No prob! Gallery? Choose from 5 already available!)
-myLANsite will be fully documented in several languages
-myLANsite uses the very powerful template engine of Mambo
-myLANsite can be extended with your own modules.
So, in future, there will be no more releases of myLANsite version 1. I surely will release bugfixes, but there are no know bugs at the moment enyway (at least, nobody did send me some)

  • myLANsite 2 - Call for Papers

    Hi Everyone!

myLANsite 1isn't that bad. Probably, you already had your own experience with it. But do never take a look at its code, it _really_ makes you sick!

myLANsite is my first PHP/MySQL Project. When I started working on it, I didn't even know what a class or an object is. Some code lines in myLANsite are the first lines i've ever written!

So, now is a good point to make a resume. myLANsite is at a breaking point now. The number of downloads on sf.net is increasing continuously. I had some feedback from end users, bugreports and feature requests.

But the code of myLANsite is very hard to maintain. It takes too long until I can release a new version. Often, I run into problems caused by my very old code (e.g. I didn't know that POST and GET vars are in global arrays, thats the reason why you have to turn register_globals = On ;-).

In the meantime, I made some other smaller projects. It was much easier for me now to write "beautiful" code that is easier to maintain. Now, I have to use my experience to improve myLANsite.

And that's the point where you come into play.
I decided to start from scratch. myLANsite 2 will be a full rewrite of the whole engine.

myLANsite 2 will be everything myLANsite 1 isn't!

    myLANsite 2 will be...
    - ...modular
    - ...clearly arranged for administrators and users
    - ...more flexible
    - ...more stable
    - ...more secure
    - ...easier to maintain
    - ...feature-rich and nevertheless simple
    - ...an easy to learn plattform for third party module writers

But it needs a little help from you!
Subit any feature request, suggestions, bugreports, thoughts, wishes, dreams, ideas, critics... to me. Use the board, write me a mail, use the tracker on sf.net, use the shoutbox, write news comments. Do it in any way you like it to do - but do it!
Write me, what modules you want, how you would like to edit items on the website, how many "common CMS features" do you want, how you could contribute, what languages do you speak (for future translations), what you would make different in the new release.

I am confident that myLANsite 2 will spread barriers in Lanparty management. In usability, features, performance and adaptability.

  • myLANsite Version 1.4a released!

myLANsite is a PHP/MySQL based system to help you manage a whole lanparty. Version 1.4a has a brand new tournament system (supports WWCL-export) and a new seat reservation (make more flexible rows).

Being there before your party to manage subscriptions, payments, tournament registrations and seat reservations. Being there at your party to keep track of the catering orders, the tournament brackets, the schedule and many more. myLANsite takes care of all steps needed to make your lanparty a real success.
myLANsite is mainly available in German, some parts are in English too. I'm still looking for translators.
