Cherry network monitoring

Project News for Cherry network monitoring

  • Cherry v0.5.1 released

There are two major changes in this release, first is the fact that the connector between webapplication and collector daemon has been re-coded and doesn't suffer from 'reconnect' problems anymore. Second and most important update is the new SNMP stack that's being used. Westhawk SNMP stack is mucht lighter than the previous one, making the entire application about half its original size.

    The complete list of changes:
    - Changed SNMP libraries to Westhawk
    - New daemon-web connector -> fixed connector issue
    - Updated 'Monitoring - Overview' page
    - Fixed history graph regeneration
    - Added experimental upgrade option to the build script

Note that people 'upgrading' from a 0.5 without switching to a clean database, will have to edit several SNMP parameters manually. All mib-2 parameters that do not start with a . (relative OID) should be changed to the full OID of the form .1.3.6.1.2.1.* .

As usual you can find this new release at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=68582

  • Cherry v0.5 released

Version 0.5 of the Cherry monitoring application allows users to monitor any SNMPv1 or SNMPv2 parameter and generate neat history graphs of them. Easy use by means of a webinterface, combined with a powerful and flexible script and graphing system make this a good alternative to monitor components (switches, routers, servers, anything really). Cherry is completely written in Java and based around the Open Source RRDtool for efficient storing and graphing of data.

The 0.5 release has a totally new installation package, and comes with a very easy-to-use Ant script. This is the first release that works on the Linux operating system, all Linux related issues should have been fixed.

  • Cherry - Stibbons released

Cherry is a Web and Java based application built around RRDtool and used for monitoring and trend analysis of SNMP collected data. Extensive per component configuration and graphing abilities make this a useful tool for the network administrator.

Originally developed for a Belgian company the first release of Cherry is dubbed 'Ponder Stibbons'.

    Features include:
    - Basic authentication (read/write user)
    - Basic (fixed) network topology information system
    - Fully configurable through a web interface, once set up, not necessary to edit configuration files
    - Automated monitoring of all kinds of numerical SNMP data
    - Easy per component configuration based on SNMP retrieved interface list
    - Extensive per component configuration, allowing multiple monitorscripts to be run for a same component,
    but at different intervals
    - Simple and efficient re-use of monitoring and graphing scripts by means of templates
    - Graph configuration and generation using the full power of RRDtool graphing capabilities
    - Efficient storage of data by the use of RRDtool (once a database is written, it never grows in size)
    - Simple baselining of data (baseline profiles), useful for trend analysis
    - Multi threaded collector daemon for efficient collecting and storing of SNMP data for many components

Since any kind of numerical SNMP data can be monitored, a lot of applications can be monitored using the net-snmp package (http://net-snmp.sourceforge.net).

The Stibbons release of Cherry comes with a set of predefined scripts for monitoring Apache, Bind, Quake 3 gameservers, FTP, General server statistics, network interface statistics.

Most scripts that make use of net-snmp (and are not used to monitor network devices, but rather servers or applications) will not work by simply setting up Cherry, they require a good net-snmp setup too, please refer to the website http://rrdtoolbox.sourceforge.net for more information on how to set these up.
