Alpha version of GAIA Web Information System released
We are proud to announce the release of the alpha version of GaWis (GAIA Web Information System). Your comments, technical suggestions and joint development proposals are welcome!
GaWis is an information system, based on database technologies, that allows merging data from heterogeneous standard sources (such as UAProfs or WURFL files) and also from users' inputs. GaWis features let you create, manage and use a customizable information source that maintains device capabilities.
We decided to design a tool such as GaWis because we consider the capability to support and integrate different device DBs a critical aspect for our Mobile Service Platform, GAIA Reply, in order to create mobile services that can be delivered to as much devices as possible.
We're releasing GaWis as open source software because we know that the mobile device DB topic is a largely debated issue, as W3C started a dedicated working group and other companies such as dotMobi are planning to build their proprietary device DB. We think that GaWis can be a useful tool for all mobile developers and the WURFL community.
We are quite satisfied of the innovative design and technologies that we adopted to build GaWis; its architecture and APIs are flexible enough to be compliant with current (WURFL, UAProf) and future standards (W3C DDR APIs).
GaWis architecture is built upon the intensive use of Spring and Hibernate frameworks. In the package you can download at http://gaia-git.sourceforge.net/gawis.htm you will also find a GaWis web application based on JSF.
GaWis UAProf-related APIs use Jena and SPARQL, while GaWis WURFL-related APIs use WURFL API and are consistent with future WURFL evolutions. GaWis Beta release will also expose GaWis APIs as web services. GaWis has been designed in order to allow future extensions to support DDR APIs.
GaWis development is fast going on, but we're open to any comment or suggestion to improve the solution; also your proposals to cooperate to extend and develop GaWis together are welcome: we know that a flexible device DB is a common goal for all the mobile developers and we will be very happy if we could avoid doubling our efforts.
Give GaWis a try and let us know what you think about it!
