Project News for Silicon Fodder

  • Ballinger Media embraces Open Source

Ballinger Media, the Milton Keynes based software developers are following in the footsteps of industry giants like Sun Microsystems and embracing the growing Open Source movement. Ballinger Media have just released “Silicon Fodder” (the source code to My Web Office, their established intranet enterprise solution) on http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/siliconfodder making it freely available to developers and companies across the world.
Open source is rapidly becoming a widely recognised medium for establishing new software platforms and applications. Open source projects benefit from contributions and expertise from a worldwide pool of talented software engineers who continually enhance and submit improvements which are then checked and incorporated into the available code ensuring that the platform remains at the cutting edge of developments. From such small beginnings began LINUX, the now world recognised operating system, today powering everything from PC’s to mobile phones. Downloading Silicon Fodder will immediately give a developer or small company access to the core components necessary to run an Internet based email/diary/document management/enterprise solution, perfect for SME’s with a mobile workforce, needing to access their information securely and from anywhere with an internet connection.
Ballinger Media Managing Director Matthew Ballinger says “ Open source is becoming increasingly recognised by the industry as an alternative route to market and we believe that it will soon be considered commonplace. We wanted to be riding the wave from the beginning and our Silicon Fodder project was the perfect place to start. By downloading Silicon Fodder you are able to move all of your internal electronic communication to a remotely hosted environment; this enables you to work anywhere, anytime, so long as you have a connection to the Internet”
For the less technically inclined, Ballinger Media Solutions will offer support, training and additional features via downloadable plug-ins or fully hosted bespoke versions of the Silicon Fodder enterprise suite under the brand name “My Web Office”. Ballinger Media Solutions have an established client base already reaping the benefits of having continuously updated software applications without having to buy costly updates.
Ballinger Media Solutions client, Rachel Wilkes, General Manager of E-commerce healthcare business Thinknatural.com said “since Thinknatural.com implemented My Web Office we have improved the speed of order fulfilment, have better stock control, and greater customer satisfaction after the My Web Office team also helped to improve the shopping experience and search engine optimisation for our website. I am confident that we have now ensured we have an IT system that can grow with the business and meets all our needs."
