Of course Windows Azure is a partial trust environment which means this is
only possible using a version of IKVM.NET that supports partial trust.  I'm
not sure if that means any dev build from

but I do know that the latest official [0.36.0.11] release (according to the
SF.NET project page[http://sourceforge.net/projects/ikvm/]<http://sourceforge.net/projects/ikvm/>,
anyway, which I assume is up-to-date?) does not work inside of the Windows
Azure fabric due to the inability to obtain adequate permissions.

FTR: The proof-of-concept uses the latest Dec. 1st, 2008 dev build[1] of
IKVM.NET (though I assume the Nov.12th RC would work just as well?) and the
latest release of Saxon/Saxon on .NET[2], which can collectively be found
@[3].  The Windows Azure web and worker application can be found @[4] which,
by the end of my dev session today, I hope to have running the cleaned-up
version of the threaded conversation sample app running @[5] -- which is, of
course, powered by Saxon on .NET/IKVM.NET -- on both W2k3 /and/
GNU/Linux/Mono/lighttpd inside of the AWS:EC2 cloud at sent time.

If anyone has interest in any of this, I plan to do a write up on
oreilly.com once I've got things to a state in which seems worth
broadcasting to a broader audience. Will update this thread with the various
details once complete.

Wow. Amazing stuff, as usual :-) I hadn’t even thought of trying that.

BTW, you are correct that this should work with the 0.38.0.2 release candidate. It includes the partial trust work I did.

Cool. I've gone ahead and updated the app to use this RC and it works as
expected.

Of course forcing myself to think in partial trust mode has proven a bit of
a challenge which is why I had to set things aside for the week to come back
to once I had a bit more time to think through the architecture. The fact
that the Azure trust policy is a modified variation of the ASP.NET medium
trust policy [http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd179369.aspx]<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd179369.aspx>
means
that what you assume /should/ be a valid operation doesn't always work out
that way.

I /have/ been able to get the core "whattheyshouldhavesaid.org" app up and
running, the core of which "compiles" the Atomictalk[1] XML markup via Saxon
on .NET and therefore via IKVM.NET for rendering on the client. But as per
http://nuxleus.cloudapp.net/ there's a few broken pieces (view in anything
/other/ than IE which refuses to render anything due to an error retrieving
one of the XML data files during the client-side transformation process),
pieces of which I plan to sit down and start to fix this afternoon.

/BUT/, the core purpose of bringing all of this up is to highlight the fact
that running a Java-based application via IKVM.NET on Azure /does/ work,
which was the primary purpose of this exercise, so wanted to quickly update
you all in case any of you who have access to Azure want to start playing
around with other Java-based apps running in the Windows Azure cloud.

Will update again once I've worked through the remaining issues and have the
working code checked into the repository.
