Yeah it is a bug in mplayer....
They would love you to help them find out where they broke it... xv is
only broken when it is running in a window, otherwise it works fine.
BTW, the recent mplayer docs say that xv is not supported in a window
either. Which I think is bull, but it is their application.

This tells MPlayer to attach to an existing window.
embed MPlayer in a browser (e.g. the plugger extension).
