I'm also having exactly the same problem!!
I'm using the source code from 1.2.0-pre3 and compiled with portaudio
and without it... the problem remains on both installations... So I
believe that the problem isn't with portaudio (v19).
Meanwhile I'd like to ask you what ALSA version are you using with
portaudio... you see, I had problems compiling with ALSA 1.0.0rc2 and I
had to made some changes on the pa_linux_alsa.c file...
(If you take a look on previous mails sent by me, you should see the
reports I've sent about this issue, if you want I can send you the file
with the changes I made... to you or to any Audacity developer... I'll
be happy to share all experiences I'm having with the software)
By now, I still need to know how to map my inputs to the first tracks in
order to avoid recording 6 tracks to record my guitar! :-|
About the cursor problem, I believe it is a bug issued by the newer
features added to the program. However I do believe that Audacity team
will solve that problem very soon!
So, let's keep trying to test the software and feedback all information
that could be important to maintain the excellent performance of this
