I would agree with Mr. Hamilton. Why do you need lines with fewer
numbers? Is it because legibility is poorer with more letters per
line? In that case, increasing interletter/interword spacing is
not the solution, larger margins are. In general, LaTeX is
designed with legibility in mind, so the standard margins provide
the ideal textwidth for each font size.
